The Empathy Capital Research Center positions "Empathy Capital" as a new form of social capital, aiming to both conceptualize and apply it in practice. Moving beyond traditional measures such as economic and human capital, we reframe empathy, trust, and cultural solidarity as essential forms of capital that sustain societies. As Mark J. Epstein and Kristi Yuthas argued in Measuring and Improving Social Impacts, social value is not created solely through quantitative outputs but also through mutual understanding and long-term community relationships. This institute's mission is to make such "social impact" visible through the lens of Empathy Capital and to translate it into policies and management practices.

We emphasize an Anti-Disciplinary approach, transcending conventional academic boundaries. Our work integrates policy studies, social welfare, management, sociology, anthropology, data science, and design thinking. Rather than confining research to the ivory tower, we value iterative exchange with practice, forging knowledge that directly contributes to social transformation.

The Institute is led by Hiroshi Nakagawa, whose background combines practical experience in social welfare management and public policy research. His distinctive strength lies in grounding theory in lived cultural practice—most notably in the study of the Japanese mikoshi (portable shrine) tradition. The act of carrying the mikoshi, with its dynamic of those who bear the weight and those who stand in symbolic positions, exemplifies how communities build empathy, recognition, and shared meaning. It serves as a living model of how Empathy Capital is accumulated and mobilized as social influence.

By uniting conceptual frameworks with cultural practices, the Empathy Capital Institute seeks to establish empathy as a legitimate and measurable form of capital. Working with researchers, practitioners, and communities both domestically and internationally, our goal is to set empathy as a new standard of value—shaping public policy, management, and community building toward a future rooted in the commons and sustained by genuine social impact.

共感資本研究所（Empathy Capital Research Center）

共感資本研究所は、「Empathy Capital（共感資本）」を社会の新しい資本概念として提示し、その体系化と実践的応用を目指す研究拠点です。従来の経済資本や人的資本といった尺度にとどまらず、人と人をつなぐ共感や信頼、文化的連帯を資本として捉え直すことで、社会の持続可能性を測る新しい枠組みを提案します。マーク・J・エプスタインやクリスティ・ユーザスらが『社会的インパクトとは何か』で論じたように、社会的価値は定量的成果だけではなく、人間の相互理解やコミュニティに根ざした持続的な関係性によって生み出されます。本研究所は、そうした「社会的インパクト」を共感資本の観点から可視化し、政策や経営に還元することを使命とします。

また、学問領域の境界を超える Anti-Disciplinary（反学際的）アプローチ を重視し、政策学・社会福祉学・経営学・社会学・文化人類学、さらにはデータサイエンスやデザイン思考までを自由に横断します。研究を「象牙の塔」に閉じ込めるのではなく、現場の実践との往復を通じて知を鍛え、社会変革に結びつける姿勢を貫きます。

所長を務める中川尋史は、社会福祉経営の実務と公共政策研究を基盤に、「Empathy Capital」理論を独自目線で構築してきました。その強みは、理論を机上にとどめず、神輿（みこし）文化の研究を通じて、地域社会の絆や承認構造を実地に観察・分析してきた点にあります。神輿担ぎに見られる「支える者と立つ者」の関係性、共同体の承認の構造は、共感資本がいかに蓄積され、また社会的影響力として機能するかを示す生きたモデルです。

共感資本研究所は、こうした理論と文化的実践を統合し、国内外の研究者・実務家・市民と連携しながら、共感を社会の新しい価値基準として確立することを目指します。その先にあるのは、社会的インパクトを正しく測り、共感を基盤とした公共政策や経営、地域づくりを推進する「共通善」の未来です。
